Description
Built in 1950 and 2007, the Tacoma Narrows Bridges bridge Tacoma and the Kitsap Peninsula. The current westbound section of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge was constructed as a replacement of the original Narrows Bridge which was nicknamed "Galloping Gertie" due to its tendency to flutter among the area's high winds. The original Gertie was opened on July 1, 1940 but collapsed into the Puget Sound just four months later on November 7th. A second bridge was built next to this one in 2007 which carries the eastbound traffic.
